CHAPTER TWELVE

There's one place I know to go.

It takes a few false starts, what with Ekene's command sphere pulling at my brain, wanting me to find Reenu and that ship's proto-viyusa farm. Hunt must have looked weird, stopping and starting as I fought the compulsion, thrusters spinning us one way and then the other.

I broke through it eventually, Dude a warm blanket under my skull.

Euiva floats on the edge of the graveyard, still a skeleton, all mech-width girders and patchy hull, but now she swarms with movement. Those small holey vessels stream in and out of her hull while what looks like Citlali's old workbots fix flat pieces of metal over her superstructure.

I would know her even without Aeotu's knowledge flowing through Hunt to me; I would know because in the eter, hidden deep within the endless darkness is a tiny spot of red.

Euiva, Aeotu whispers inside my skull.

Grea, I whisper, but not to Aeotu. I whisper it forward, shoot it into the darkness.

Is it my imagination, or does the red burn brighter in response?

The darkness moves, the unfinished hull with it. The activity on Hunt's sensors pauses, nanites and power fluctuating, shifting first one way and then another, before it explodes. Viyusa colours Euiva's superstructure red and a scan hits us in the chest. It's almost a physical weight pressing against my ribs, making Hunt's generator stutter. Even Dude flattens himself on my shoulder.

I can't breathe. The HUD goes dark.

The weight is gone as quickly as it came. I draw air on a ragged gasp as the HUD flickers back to the life, everything the same as before, except for the beacon pulsing in the midst of Euiva's wreck.

I guess she knows we're coming.

Hunt's thrusters fire and we're hurtling toward the closest gaping hole.

Best not to disappoint her.
